I painted "into action" early in '01 when I was living in Berlin, listening
to the BBC on cable while I worked. There was a brief report about just another
humdrum day of US and British air raids on Iraq. So this is a pre-9/11 painting.
I messaged my dad, did you know we bombed Iraq today, again? That we do
this all the time? Was there anything on the news about it in the US? Anything at all?
This painting came from my understanding that I was going
to have to become an activist of some kind-- despite my perception that I
had no relevant or useful tools for the fight. In the symbolism of the
painting, I did not even have any clothes to wear. I gave myself Athena's
helmet because I've always been a certain kind of smart; if a thing can be
figured out, I will figure it out eventually. But I wasn't starting with much
(empty-handed).I felt humiliated every single time I tried to speak or write
about politics-- deeply inadequate and completely unprepared. But I had to
start anyway.
Turns out this is how a whole lot of activists get their start. I found that out later!
