Ajax carries the body of Achilles (after Kleitias)
11" x 14"
oil on canvas

Several vase paintings depicting this basic scene still exist; it was a popular
image. Often the figures are labeled "Ajax carrying the dead Achilles from the
battlefield at Troy." With only a few minor additions of clothing, the image
becomes Achilles carrying Penthesilea, the Amazon queen he slew. This version
is closest to the black-figure version on the handle of the Francois vase,
ca 570 B.C. by Kleitias.
